Consider, firstly, that your child will live all his life with this name, which may even help to define who he is. Remember to take the following into account (and yes, they may seem obvious, but sometimes even the most obvious aspects are overlooked in our zeal to find the perfect name):
1. Your baby’s gender
2. The names of family members and best friends.
3. Your ethnic origins and where you currently live.
4. Think of the rhythm and sound of the name, together with the surname – for example, short names go with long surnames, and vice versa. Alliteration can also work well, eg: Jack Johnson.
5. Do you want traditional, trendy or unique? A unique name will make your child feel special. But if it’s too unique he/she may constantly have to explain or spell their name. Something too trendy may be really common or out of place in years to come.
6. Consider the acronym the initials of name and surname will spell out, it could be embarrassing for your child.
7. Consider the possible nicknames and whether you like them - say them out loud and see if they are acceptable.
8. Put your name through the "bully" test. Rhyme it with anything you can think of and look for hidden words or meanings that may be seized upon by a 5th grader.
9. Names with a valued meaning are a good traditional option.
10. It’s a good idea to both start with a list of names that you like, then swap them with your partner who crosses off those they can’t stand. Continue until you’ve eliminated most and have an agreed on select few that you can mull over.
The baby name you choose can have an effect on your child in later life.
