Top ten girls' names

Ruby has been replaced by Olivia as the most popular girls’ name in Britain. Olivia was no. 3 in 2007 and has been climbing steadily upwards. Ruby originally came out of nowhere when Charlotte Church named her daughter Ruby in 2007.

Many names have remained in the top ten for at least a decade, including Emily, Jessica, Chloe and Sophie. Lexi is a newcomer on the list, jumping 40 places in a year and no doubt making its way up to the top ten in time.

Top ten boys' names

Jack reigns supreme as the most popular boys’ name for the 13th year in a row. Thomas has dropped one place in the last 10 years to no. 3 and Joshua is still fifth, as it was back in 1998.

Boys names on the way up the list (but not yet in the top 10) include William, Riley, Theo, Gabriel, Blake, Ewan and Zak.

Names teachers fear

Teachers in the UK have revealed that there are certain names that they associate with troublemakers in the class. it may be premature and judgemental, but teachers admit to making assumptions and having a cautious attitude when they see names such as Callum, Chelsea, Connor and Jack, Brandon, Charlie, Courtney and Chardonnay on their class register.
