Leg cramps, or painful spasms in the calf muscles, are experienced by almost half of all pregnant women, particularly in the third trimester. They tend to occur at night, are repetitive and distressing. We still do not know the cause of these cramps, although many theories exist about mineral deficiencies, such as sodium, calcium and magnesium. Many drugs have been used to relieve symptoms, including quinine, vitamin D, calcium and salt tablets. There are no significant trials that have shown any particular drug to be most effective. People who are low in dietary sodium may benefit from salt tablets and some from magnesium supplements. Massage and stretching the affected muscles usually afford relief during an attack.
