My mother had five miscarriages before she had me. I am trying to get pregnant for the first time – it’s been six months – and fear there is something wrong and the same will happen to me. Do I have reason to worry?

Dr Sarah Shanahan

This is a very difficult question to answer as there are many factors that influence miscarriage and fertility difficulties. Your mother’s history may have no bearing on you; equally, it could do.

We would need to know whether your mother had the miscarriages consecutively, had any medical problems, used medications and if a cause was identified. It would be reasonable to assume that her history may have no impact on your fertility and for you to continue trying to conceive under the guidance of your gynaecologist.
