Is cola safe during pregnancy?

Dietician Karen Protheroe

Yes, it is safe in small quantities – perhaps a glass a day. However, there is no nutritional benefit in cola beverages. Cola drinks contain caffeine, which can cross the placenta and increase the risk of premature birth, but they also contain lots of chemicals that flavour, colour and preserve the drink. Consumed in small quantities, they may not harm your unborn child, but they do not enhance yours or your baby's health.
